Butcher and the Boar

Shrimp and Grits

Minneapolis has no shortage of standout restaurants, but few marry Southern comfort with bold, upscale execution like Butcher & the Boar. I am so happy they are open again and during my recent brunch visit, one dish stole the spotlight: their shrimp and grits.

Visually, it's stunning—four perfectly seared jumbo shrimp arranged over a creamy bed of stone-ground grits, garnished with pickled red onions, fresh chives, and roasted garlic cloves. The presentation is confident but unpretentious, and the flavors are even better.

The shrimp had a beautiful sear that delivered a subtle smokiness, perfectly balanced by the richness of the grits. The grits themselves were luxuriously smooth, and buttery—exactly what you'd hope for. The pickled onions cut through the richness with a bright tang, while the garlic brought depth and warmth. It’s a thoughtful composition that respects the Southern roots of the dish while elevating it for a modern palate.

I also couldn’t resist trying another brunch favorite—an Irish Coffee! The delicious drink made famous in San Francisco was made with a delicious, smooth coffee and a sprinkle of nutmeg over the cream topping.

Butcher & the Boar isn’t just serving comfort food—it’s reimagining it. And if this dish is any indication, they're back to doing it with precision, creativity, and soul.
